The PKG file serves as the fundamental unit of software distribution on the PlayStation Network (PSN) for PS4. It functions as an encrypted archive, similar to a ZIP file, but with specific cryptographic signatures mandated by Sony.
When dealing with PKG files, game updates are distributed as separate, standalone PKG installers rather than being downloaded automatically via the PlayStation Network (PSN).
To run unsigned or fake PKG files, a PS4 console must be running older, vulnerable system software exploits. Consoles running modified firmware cannot safely connect to the PlayStation Network. Attempting to go online with a modified console will result in an immediate, permanent ban of your PSN account and a hardware ban of the console itself.
