Access to gender-affirming care—supported by major medical associations worldwide—remains a critical necessity for mental health and well-being. Simultaneously, social affirmation, such as the correct use of a person's chosen name and pronouns, serves as a simple yet life-saving act of basic human respect.
To foster genuine allyship, individuals and organizations must move beyond passive acceptance. This involves actively supporting trans-led organizations, respecting personal pronouns, educating oneself on gender diversity, and advocating for policies that protect the safety, dignity, and healthcare rights of transgender individuals everywhere. As GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis stated: “Americans should refuse to accept a country where our neighbors fear for their safety. Within two years of Stonewall, gay rights groups existed in every major American city, as well as in Canada, Australia, and Western Europe. Pride festivals, the most public displays of LGBTQ identity, saw dramatic increases in threats and violence. There were 268 anti-LGBTQ incidents in June 2025 alone—a nearly 400 percent increase from just 54 incidents in June 2022, when GLAAD first began collecting data.
